I have a question for all of you amazing seamstresses. How did you learn how to sew? I took a class in the eighth grade, but that was quite some time ago and I don't remember a thing. I don't even remember learning; I just remember sitting down and getting to work, and suddenly having a pair of purple boxer shorts. (If only!)

My mom can sew but is too lazy to teach me, and I don't know who else to ask. I don't want to fiddle with a sewing machine until I learn on my own, because I'm sure I'll break it -- SO! How does one teach themselves how to sew?

I think I just broke my mom's sewing machine. I was working on a hem for the lining of a purse I'm making, and the needle spazzed and just...stayed down in the fabric rather than coming up like it's supposed to (the needle automatically goes up when you take your foot off the pedal). I tried the button that brings the needle down for when you need to turn corners, but it didn't bring the needle up. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Mom's at work and won't be home until later today, and I'm just a little worried about it. Should I cut the fabric so that I can get it out of the way, or what?

Edit: I'm sorry for continuing to post my questions up, but I'm trying to put a button and elastic on as a clasp for the bag. Should I hand sew the elastic, and if so does anyone have any tips for this?

Hi there!

I was dismayed when I bought a new bicycle and realised that I could not fit my usual messengerbag in the basket on it. So, inspired by the community, I decided to make a new one. It is made from a large t-shirt and an old jeans-skirt that was too small for me.

so, late last summer I went garage-sailing (yes...sailing) with some friends and we came across a great old-lady estate sale. So I took this cute cuffed brown shirt from there and did some work and now, at the very least it's not plain.

what did you guys do to get good before you dived into making stuff?

I've been making hammocks and beds for my rats (might make a few cat beds too), because they don't care if it's not quite straight, messy here and there, etc. :D I'm just winging it usually, but I'm working on a tube-hammock thing now out of a trouser leg that I planned out, and it's looking really nice now. too bad it probably won't last long..let's just say once they're comfy in one place, they won't get up for anything. >_>
I'm gonna be really scared once I actually do my first shirt resize or something, haha.
